What is EMDR Therapy?
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a proven, evidence-based therapy designed to help people heal from trauma, anxiety, and emotional distress. Unlike talk therapy, EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess painful memories. It’s especially effective when you’ve tried other therapies and still feel stuck.
Online EMDR therapy in Ontario can reduce symptoms like flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, and emotional overwhelm—often more quickly than traditional approaches. It’s effective for both “Big T” trauma (like accidents, abuse, or major life events) and “Little t” trauma (such as ongoing emotional neglect, bullying, or relationship wounds) that build up over time. Whether you’re healing from childhood trauma, relational pain, or recent life experiences, EMDR offers a powerful path forward to feeling calmer, more in control, and emotionally free.
- Constant exhaustion, even after rest

How EMDR Therapy Works
EMDR is an 8-phase, trauma-informed therapy approach that gently guides your brain in reprocessing painful memories—at a pace that feels right for you. It’s structured, evidence-based, and designed to help you feel more calm, clear, and in control as you heal.
Getting to know you
We’ll begin by exploring your history, challenges, and goals to decide which memories or experiences to focus on in therapy.
Getting ready
Your therapist will explain how EMDR works and teach you ways to stay calm, manage your emotions, and feel grounded in sessions.
Bringing up the memory
We gently identify the memory, emotions, thoughts, and body sensations connected to your experience—checking how distressing it still feels.
Desensitization
Using eye movements or tapping, we help your brain reprocess the memory so it becomes less emotionally charged over time.
Building up positive thoughts
Once the distress fades, we replace limiting beliefs with empowering ones—like “I am strong,” and reinforce them using bilateral stimulation.
Checking your body’s reaction
We check how your body feels and clear any remaining tension, so healing happens both emotionally and physically.
Closing the session
We make sure you feel safe and grounded before ending, with tips to stay steady between sessions if the memory isn’t fully processed yet.
Checking in & reevaluating
In our next session, we’ll review how you’ve felt since the last EMDR session and decide together what to work on next.
Through EMDR therapy in Ontario, we help you understand your emotions—not fear them, so you can turn pain into growth and healing.

FAQs About EMDR Therapy
What is EMDR therapy and how does it work?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a research-backed therapy that helps you heal from trauma and emotional distress. It uses gentle, guided eye movements or tapping (called bilateral stimulation) to help your brain reprocess painful memories, reduce emotional overwhelm, and shift negative beliefs.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, you don’t need to relive every detail of the trauma. EMDR allows your brain to do the work of healing—so you can feel calmer, more in control, and free from the past.
What types of trauma does EMDR help with?
EMDR therapy in Ontario can support healing from both big and small traumatic experiences. These may include:
- Major life events (accidents, illness, abuse, loss, or violence)
- Childhood emotional wounds (neglect, criticism, bullying, feeling “not good enough”)
- Relational trauma (breakups, rejection, or conflict)
- Pregnancy loss, birth trauma, or postpartum depression
No trauma is “too small” if it still affects how you feel today. EMDR can help you release what’s holding you back.
How do I know if I need EMDR therapy?
Unresolved trauma often shows up in unexpected ways. You might feel anxious, low, or constantly “on edge.” You may struggle with focus, low self-esteem, relationship challenges, or physical symptoms like headaches or fatigue.
If talk therapy hasn’t helped as much as you’d hoped—or if you feel stuck despite all the work you’ve done—EMDR therapy in Ontario could offer the deeper healing you’ve been searching for.
What does a typical EMDR session look like?
Your EMDR therapist in Ontario will guide you to focus gently on a distressing memory while using bilateral stimulation (like eye movements or tapping). This helps your brain reprocess the memory, so it feels less overwhelming and more neutral over time.
Virtual EMDR therapy sessions are structured but move at your pace. You stay fully alert and in control, and your therapist ensures you feel grounded and safe every step of the way.
Can EMDR make things worse? Is it safe?
EMDR therapy is safe when guided by a trained, trauma-informed therapist. It’s normal for emotions to surface during a session—that’s part of the healing process. Your therapist will support you in staying grounded and within a manageable emotional range throughout.
Over time, the distress tied to painful memories fades, and the emotional weight they carry is replaced by a sense of strength, calm, and resilience. Healing can feel intense, but you’re never alone in the process.
